Huntsville April 8th 2012

img1Today our team had a day off. We went to a local river Tennessee, on the shore was very nice. The weather was perfect. Good catch Wi-Fi. We have the whole day sunbathing, playing rugby, walking, talking with family and friends by skype. It was a good night's rest before the serious preparation and training.

For lunch we with  Ralf went for the pizza for students, but in America at the weekend  difficult to find an open pizza, so we have been easier to buy food at the store, and eating pizza left for the evening.

In the evening, after the dinner,  Ralf and Yvonne brought us to a great Chinese restaurant, there was a very tasty meal, everyone enjoyed it.

Alles in allem muss der Berichtnamen also so aussehen: Datum_rückwärts-Überschrift-Name-Sprache.

Da muss ein neues Rad her.

img1Roman and Eugene today engaged established and tests moonbuggy all day. Eugene refined folding mechanism, made the castle, mud flaps installed. The boys are very closely protests construction. I am engaged to dinner transfer papers, written reports and trained. After dinner, the guys from Italy broke his moonbuggy, crashing into a car on the road. Eugene and Roma help students repaired it. I have at this time went to the hotel Marriott, swim in the pool. This was my first day in America when properly managed to sunbathe and relax. Marriott is a very good hotel, in the hall is always cozy, lots of big sofas and a huge TV.

img2In the evening we were invited to a local party in honor of the first manned flight into space-«Yuri's Night». It was interesting, the Americans are very friendly and hospitable. We stayed there for about 2 hours and drove to the hotel.
Before going to bed I with Roman decided to walk around the city, look around. Huntsville is a beautiful  town.

Huntsville, 06. 04.2012
img1In the morning at 9.25 we left for the moonbuggy garage, where Ralf showed us the videos we made yesterday. Then we went to Huntsville’s Maple Hill Cemetery ( very different from the Italian ones, very big and organized in a way that makes it possible to cross it freely even by car ), where a lot of scientists and engineers that contributed to the construction of rockets and shuttles during the Cold War rest. Ralf showed us the grave of Ernst Stuhlinger, who emigrated to Huntsville with the team of Wehrner von Braun, and told us the story of his last days…
img2Stuhlinger, although formally enemy of Russian engineers, when he was in Moscow, wanted to homage to grave of a great scientist such as korolev, Sputnik designer: even so, when he arrived to the cemetery, it was impossible for him to find flowers; years later, when ill for old age, Korolev’s daughter came to visit him by his bed in Huntsville, to whom Stuhlinger gave thirty dollars to do what he couldn’t when in Russia: she was able to complete the task and, a while later, after receiving a photograph of the grave righteously honored, Dr. Stuhlinger died.
img3Another anecdote on a famous designer, Konrad Dannenberg: during the Second World War, his brigade had to be transferred from the French front to the Russian; von Braun, knowing of the danger of confrontation with the Russian army and needing missile engineers, ordered the capture of the passengers of troop trains and that these were brought back if competent on the matter; in his group Dannenberg was the only one who had any kind of experience with small propulsion rocket models: he was brought back to base, and that’s how he survived from the massacre the other soldiers were condemned to when arrived in Russia.

Later on we went up Mont Sano with our van, a hill that Mr. and Mrs. Stuhlinger chose as their home. So we arrived at the top and met Mrs. Stuhlinger on her front porch, and she invited us inside so we could have the opportunity to see where the famous engineer lived. After a pleasant chat and some photos, we said goodbye, and started to go back to the garage.

On our way back, we stopped at “EducationTelevision”, a TV studio in Huntsville that works prevalently for kids and schools, and that in his 5 channels shows educational programs, school news and local news. Here, guided by a technician and a journalist, we had the opportunity to see the filming studio, the editing studio and the sounds studio.
Then, like every other day, we went back to the hall to continue our moonbuggy construction. Today, in particular, we fixed the chains and the suspensions; meanwhile Cini went to the local bicycle shop, to buy some missing pieces, like new multiple-gear-chains and a handle pipe.

Great German Engineers

Team Russia
Moonbuggy team Russia 2012, college
International Space Education Institute

Huntsville April 6th 2012

img1Today we planned to visit three places before lunch, after dinner, work on the moonbuggy.

img2Visited the cemetery of the Huntsville, where were buried the engineers who worked with von Braun, we visited their graves. We made pictures. Ralph told us about the two of them- Ernst Stulinger and Conrad von Danenberg. They were the Von Braun’s right and left hands. Stulenger’d wanted to see engineers from Russia, with whom he had been racing all his life. But when did he came to Moscow can’t put flowers to the Korolev’s grave. Therefore, when the designer's daughter Natalia was in Huntsville, he handed her an envelope with 30 dollars and asked buy flowers and lay them on the grave of his father.

img3Another engineer  Conrad von Danenberg was a 20 years old student  when Iwas a 2nd World War, he was to be sent to the eastern front, and it is already loaded into wagons and sent along with all the front, but at the time did not have enough engineers who can work with a rocket technique, so the government decided to leave in the rear of all professionals. The train, which was the engineer stopped, the general build of all soldiers in the convoy and asked, "Are any of you experts can work with missile technology," and from a huge step ahead of the column made he alone. Since the school he attended in a rocket circle, and these skills saved his life.

img5After the cemetery we went to  misses Stulenger. She was very hospitable and invited us into her house, I saw a live American engineers. Very intelegentny and beautiful home - a spacious room with large window which overlooks a beautiful landscape - with views of the Montesano mountain. The house has a lot of things that reflected the era of the famous - posters signed by Von Braun, family photos, applications of shells, a large library.

Been to the local TV - Huntsvill Educational television. Beautiful studio, very good equipment, the director of the studio we had personally guided tour.У

Dinner went to the garage.

Testing moonbuggy, trained on it. We have problem with the brake problem - fix bad big wheels. After a trip Eugeniy decided to remake the Lock mechanism. Put mud flaps, once again spun all the bolts, check the structural strength. Now we can jump from a height of 40 cm, without fear of resistance. Moved the rear axle, new seats are very hard, tomorrow will have to fill them with foam. The whole evening guys helped other teams to collect and debug their buggy.

In the evening came Terry with his son, arrived from Berlin, Max and Vicki. Max did a great barbecue.

Lock mechanism, we did not finish, left him on the morrow.

Frankfurt, 06.04.2012

So blieb uns viel Stress erspart.
