They are called Moonbuggy and are some sort of “bicycles” used by the astronauts on the Moon surface.
Every year NASA organizes an international competition in Huntsville, Alabama, and more then one thousand students from more then 20 countries participate to it: boys and girls are selected among thousands of applications sent to the American space association. This year, five students from the gymnasium Benedetti from Venice will represent Italy at the NASA´s Great Moonbuggy Race. This is the first time that some Italian students were selected. They were selected from the International Space Education Institute, point of reference for NASA in Europe, to take part to this famous and unique event on the 13th and 14th April. Daniele Cini, Marco De Lorenzi, Giacomo Labbri, Simon Galletti e Laura Martin, the Venetian female role in this team, will fly to Alabama; coordinated by Professor Claudio Forieri vice director and Physic Professor. This is a singular sport and technologic adventure, as well as a unique educational experience for the students, which started in February when their class was selected for an international workshop organized by a German Institute. The workshop included several visits to companies technologically advanced and work in a vocational institute, giving the students the chance to try a Moonbuggy.
A call on the knife-edge for the five students from the gymnasium Benedetti, who will join other teams, for example English and Indian. Usually the team design and build their own Moonbuggy. But this year the Venetian students will be part of a bigger group with other students, who have been working on that longer, and will help them during the race and also driving the “human powered vehicles”, as stated on the Race rules, which are built on the base of the lunar rover.
But they are already looking beyond. The gymnasium has already the goal of build a completely Italian buggy and to bring the competition in Venice. “Gymnasium Benedetti would like to be a benchmark for a demonstrative Moonbuggy race in Venice and maybe make Venice the base for a selection race for Italian teams that would like to participate in the next NASA´s Great Moonbuggy Race”, said Professor Forieri.
