Questa mattina invece di fare la nostra visita mattutina di Huntsville abbiamo deciso di recarci direttamente al garage per via del grande lavoro che ci resta ancora da fare in preparazione alla Great Moonbuggy Race. Ci siamo dedicati principalmente a due attività:
1) abbiamo apportato i loghi degli sponsor sulle nostre tute del Team Italy. Si è dovuto stirare ad alta temperatura i patch sulle tute nuove in modo di incollarle nelle corrette posizioni in relazione alla grandezza della sponsorizzazione.  
2) abbiamo applicato i freni alle ruote del nostro Moonbuggy.

Nel pomeriggio finiamo di montare i freni e le marce della parte anteriore: il Moonbuggy sembra praticamente pronto, quindi Cini e Laura lo guidano per la prima volta all’aria aperta, accompagnati da Simon per andare a prendere i pochi pezzi mancanti….. Purtroppo dopo qualche centinaio di metri l’asse di sterzo si stacca a metà, il Moonbuggy sbanda e va sbattere, torcendo irrimediabilmente la ruota!!! Ralf ci viene a prendere con il furgoncino (nel frattempo si è anche allentata la connessione tra il back e il front axle, quindi si sono staccati senza che avessimo alcun attrezzo per unirli!), carichiamo i pezzi di Moonbuggy e torniamo alla volta del garage.

Rimandiamo ad un successivo momento l’analisi dei danni perché, grazie al signor Terry, abbiamo ottenuto tutti un biglietto per la celebrazione della Yuri’s Night (in onore del cosmonauta russo Yuri Gagarin, primo uomo nello spazio) di oggi, che si tiene all’Huntsville Space Center. Ci rechiamo lì velocemente e subito veniamo a contatto con il pezzo forte dell’esposizione, una riproduzione del razzo Saturn conservata all’esterno, alta a occhio un’ottantina di metri, ritta e imponente. Entriamo dunque all’interno dell’edificio.

All’interno, in una sala di proporzioni vastissime, decine e decine di modellini, immagini, filmati, esperimenti interattivi e simili, tutti rigorosamente accompagnato da tavole esplicative assolutamente esaurienti, fanno mostra di sé lungo un corridoio sul quale camminano moltissimi visitatori. Tra le altre cose, la capsula originale dell’Apollo XII recuperata dall’oceano, diversi simulatori di volo, documenti autografi di Wehrner von Braun e della sua équipe e riproduzioni di autentici Moonbuggy lunari.
Questa notte Simon e Cini sono di turno al garage con Max: con Ralf vedono che i danni sono fortunatamente limitati, e la conoscenza delle cause dell’incidente ci permette di apportare una serie di migliorie che, se non fossero state fatte, avrebbero potuto seriamente compromettere l’esito della gara!

Dieser Tag war wohl der schwerste und schwierigste aller Tage. Ich musste um 4.00 Uhr am Morgen aufstehen, um pünktlich am Bahnhof zu stehen, wo mein Zug dann 5.12 Uhr abfuhr. Zusammen mit Cosma und Yvonne fuhr ich nach München, wo unsere Reise über den „großen Teich“ begann. Um 15.55 Uhr sollte unser Flieger gehen, also hatten wir noch genug Zeit, als wir aus dem Zug ausstiegen, um uns unsere Beine am Flughafen zu vertreten und etwas zum Mittag zu Essen. Als wir dann eingecheckt hatten, trafen wir die restlichen deutschen Teammitglieder, die schon mit dem Flugzeug von Leipzig nach München kamen und dann auf uns warteten. Endlich konnten wir im unser Flugzeug nach Washington einsteigen. Dann stand uns ein 9-stündiger Flug bevor. Auf diesem Flug konnten alle Filme schauen, Musik hören oder ein Buch lesen. Als wir dann endlich gegen 20.00 Uhr der Ortszeit (also 3.00 Uhr in Dtl.) aus dem Flughafen konnten, waren wir doch alle recht erschöpft und waren froh, endlich auf die Zimmer in unserem Hotel gehen und schlafen zu können.

Tag 2 unserer Amerika-Reise begann mit dem Aufstehen um 5.30 Uhr. Danach trafen wir uns 6.00 Uhr im Foyer unseres Hotels um mit einem amerikanischen Taxi zurück zum Flughafen in Washington zu fahren. Von dort würde unser Flieger nach Huntsville gehen. Nach dem wir im Flughafen gefrühstückt hatten, ging es dann auch gleich in den Flieger. Leider hatte dieser einige Minuten Verspätung. Nach einer Flugzeit von ca. 1.30 h landeten wir dann endlich im warmen Huntsville. Von dort wurden wir dann vom Flughafen mit unserem großen „Teambus“ von Ralf abgeholt. Wir fuhren nicht zuerst ins Hotel, sondern gleich in unsere Moonbuggy-Garage. Dort verbrachten wir den Nachmittag bis zum Abend. Es wurde Mittagessen zubereitet und die Koffer ausgeladen. Gegen 19.00 Uhr machten wir uns dann auf den Weg in unser Hotel, um die Zimmer zu beziehen. Die meisten von uns schliefen gleich nach dem Zubettgehen ein.

Die Reise in die USA zur Teilnahme am "NASA Great Moonbuggy Race" steht nun direkt vor der Tür und ich bin schon sehr aufgeregt. Die letzten Wochen waren eine ganze Menge Arbeit und es war manchmal nicht leicht Schule und Moonbuggy unter einen Hut zu bekommen, doch es hat im Endeffekt doch geklappt.

Viele Sorgen quälten uns vor dem Antritt der Reise, wie z.B. der Absprung eines Sponsors im Januar, das Fehlen einer geeigneten Fahrerin, immer wieder technische Schwierigkeiten, die sibirische Kälte, das Ausscheiden eines Teammitgliedes, welches für die Telemetrie verantwortlich war oder die kurzfristige Beschaffung noch fehlender Teile, um wirklich alle unsere Moonbuggys einsatzbereit zu bekommen.

Ein paar letzte Handgriffe zum Verpacken des Buggys sind noch zu machen aber dann geht es endlich los. Ich bin mir sicher, dass die Arbeit, die wir Woche für Woche aufbrachten, sich auszahlt und wir mit gutem Gewissen gegenüber unseren Sponsoren und Eltern wieder nach Deutschland zurückfliegen können. Wir sind gut vorbereitet und unsere Fahrer sind topfit!

Bemerkung der Teamleitung: Tim entwarf nach nur 2 Monaten CAD-Kurs mit unseren russischen Teammitgliedern einen Einsteigerbausatz für Schüler der Klassenstufen 5-8. Am 26.3.2012 stellten wir diesen Bausatz dem NASA-Büro für Ausbildungsangelegenheiten in Huntsville vor. Man ist davon schlichtweg begeistert und wünscht sich diesen Bausatz nebst dessen Bauanleitung in das Ausbildungsprogramm der NASA aufzunehmen. Glückwunsch!

I am Sahil Sehgal, I live in Delhi India, graduated in 2011 in Electronics and communication engineering from Guru Tegh Bahadur institute of Technology affiliated to IP University, Delhi, India.

NASA (National Aeronautical & Space Administration), one of the pioneer space research organization of the world has been constantly working on lunar rovers to bring out facts about this natural satellite to discover possibilities of human’s survival. Encouraging this research, they conduct an annual competition called “NASA GREAT MOONBUGGY RACE” at U.S Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, USA.

An intensive course – a 7/10 miles of hills & craters simulating the lunar surface is constructed to test the students with their engineering skills and endurance to compete at an international level & prove their mettle to excel in their future career.
My interest in space education and a dream to be a part of NASA, become true when I participated in NASA Great Moonbuggy Race, 2010 (Team Leader) and 2011 (Technical Leader), where I saw many teams from all over the world came up with their moonbuggies to be at the top place, some of them with simple designs and some with complex and high tech designs.

In 2010, we did not win, but we never succumbed to the pressure and the loss and always rose higher with innovative ideas whenever we had our backs against the walls to realize our dreams turn into reality. So, in 2011 we registered in the competition once again with completely new moonbuggy with higher efficiency than the previous one. Our ability to overcome obstacles both on and off the course was recognized in the final ceremony when we received together with all indian teams  the “International Team Award" by NASA.
We were also felicitated by Indian National Overseas Congress, Long Island, New York, USA for our achievement at NASA.

But that was not the end; just the beginning, after the competition we received an invitation from Mr. Ralf Heckel, Chairman of the International Space Education Institute, Leipzig, Germany to attend the International Moonbuggy Summerschool, 2011. ISEI are so far the best International Team in the competition with nearly 10 awards in last 5 years and a winning team in 2010.
The program was sounding very interesting to me and my teammate Abhinandan Roy Chowdhury, so we went to Leipzig on 18th July to make an association between India and Germany and both of us are now the Leaders of ISEI India Division.

The foremost drive for us to be in Germany was Telemetry, one of the most powerful subjects which help to scrutinize the technical details and provide a way to improve the performance and efficiency of the buggy for the future years. We had a number of excursions which concerned space-rocket history, such as to the Mittelwerk rocketplant that the Nazis used as a factory for the V1 and V2 rockets, and in various occasions we learnt more about space history. I like the space race between the personalities of German scientist Wernher Von Braun, who later worked for NASA in the US, and Sergej Pavlovitch Korolev, the Soviet engineer who designed the Sputnik. Also Interaction with many German High tech companies and seminars with specialists proved to be a great learning experience for both of us.

From day 1, the NASA core values were made to run through our veins. These core values not only strengthen our values but allow us stretch our limits. “Teamwork, Integrity, Safety, Excellence, Mission Success” was the common language that was spoken within the International SEI. Many different nationalities were there under one roof but everyone followed and worked for mankind because moon and space will be reached by the Humans not by nationalities and we can do this but only together.

We were offered a possibility to participate in the 2012 competition as a multinational team in collaboration with Italy, under the supervision of ISEI along with NASA’s ok. Abhinandan and me, initiated the work by collecting three more students from the college. So, now all of us are part of the four multinational teams under ISEI.

Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Ralf and Yvonne Heckel to offer us such great prospects that would prove to be a boon and in still in myself the audacity and buoyancy to excel in my life by getting informative information on space education and reciprocate them for the evolution of humanity and explore unlimited opportunities.

Jetzt geht es wieder los. Wohin?? Natürlich wieder in die USA. Die Belohnung für die ganze Hektik und Stress. Dieses Jahr soll es spannend werden. Ich werde dieses Jahr einer der Fahrer sein. Ich bin schon ganz gespannt wie es dieses Jahr wird. Wie ich dazu kam? Hier ist meine Geschichte:

Wie bin ich zum Moonbuggy gekommen? Das war so: Ich war am „Tag des Handwerks“ im mit einer kleinen Gruppe meiner Schule im BTZ Borsdorf. Dort wurde auch das Moonbuggy vorgestellt.. Das war im September 2010. Sie fragten unsere Klassenlehrerin, ob sie ein paar Schüler in der Klasse hat, die an so etwas Interesse haben. Natürlich suchte sie sich, nach dem sie sich alle aufgeschrieben hatte, 5 Leute raus (weil es nur 5 Fahrkarten gab). Wie es sich rausstellte war ich leider nicht dabei. Ich überlegte mir dann wie ich es hinbekommen könnte doch mitzugehen. Auf einmal fiel mir was ein, was wäre, denn wenn einer Krank werden würde. Dann wäre ja ein Platz wieder frei und so fragte ich ob ich zur Not so einen Anmeldezettel ausfüllen darf, falls einer krank werde. Einen Tag vor der Vorstellung des Moonbuggys, wie durch Zufall, wurde einer der 5 Personen krank.  Ich durfte mitgehen.

Der Tag war gekommen, wir fuhren mit dem Zug nach Borsdorf um zum BTZ zu kommen. Dort angekommen wurden wir auch schon empfangen. Wir staunten erst einmal bis wir uns nicht mehr halten konnten und sofort mit dem Moonbuggy  fahren mussten. Natürlich durften wir sofort fahren. Wir machten ein Rennen. Wer die schnellste Zeit fährt, der gewann. Jeder durfte so oft wie er wollte. Komischerweise gewann ich. Ich hatte anscheinend schon das richtige Gefühl. Nach dem Rennen kam eine Preisverleihung. Der erste Platz bekam ein Werkzeug-Set.

Nach schon einer Woche traf ich mich mit Herrn Heckel im Space Hotel regelmäßig. So bin ich zum Moonbuggy gekommen. Wir machten dann viele Dinge in der Werkstatt, dem Büro und auch Exkursionen. Im Januar 2011 durfte ich mit nach Moskau zum Geburtstag vom Sputnik-Konstrukteur Koroljow. Ich habe ein Blog geschrieben. Im April 2011 fuhr ich zum ersten Mal mit nach Huntsville zum Moonbuggy Race der NASA, natürlich erst einmal als Mechaniker. Das war toll.

Nach einem Jahr bin ich sogar soweit das ich ein eigenes Team habe. Wir sind das Moonbuggy Team 2. Ich bin stolz auf meine Teammitglieder. Sie machen alles damit wir rechtzeitig fertig werden. Ich danke euch Jungs. Natürlich bedanke ich mich auch bei meiner Fahrerin die mit mir ein gutes Team ergibt.
