Today, Prof. Dr. h.c. Ing. Freiherr Jesco von Puttkamer would have been 81 years old. The German-American scientist dedicated his life to space, the technical and scientific application for young academics and the vision strength of our two companies. ‘From Apollo to ISS’ is not only the name of one of his books (Herbig Verlag), but is also about his life at NASA. From 1996 onwards, von Puttkamer worked as a technical manager in charge of the daily operations at the International Space Station Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington and was, with the „Project Mars" (Herbig Verlag) already looking into the not too distant future.

For Prof. von Puttkamer, who unexpectedly died from an illness on 12.27.2012, the closure of the 30 year old Space Shuttle fleet was a "necessary measure for establishing new resources for the future" That this is now for the general public a sensible step on the ground as a part of future planning. Today Mr Samuel Scimemi has replaced Jesco von Puttkamer as the ISS Director. He and his colleagues from the Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD) are currently eagerly looking at the development of the COTS-program (Commercial Orbital Transportation Systems) and to the formation of the new CLV (Crew Launch Vehicle) and SLS-programs (Space leeks System). The latter are in Puttkamers words ‘an evolutional symbiosis of the successful Apollos and the space shuttles. The COTS-Program is the ‘measured necessity of scientificboard to outsource for forward functioning in order to be able to concentrate on the core of the work’.

In one of the many conversations since 1998, Puttkamer said: "One day a private companies will make our work here in the Low Orbit. The first among these will have the job of searching for ore in the Asterioiden belt. Then in calm we can move after another planet search." There is currently an asteroid "266725 Vonputtkamer" that has been named after him as a timeless recognition of this words.

Exactly a year ago on 09.22.2013, on the grounds of on his life and his long service (pleasure – gladness) his fellow colleagues founded the "Jesco von Puttkamer Association" at the International Space Education Institute in Leipzig, which was established in 2005. Since then there have been exactly 300 activities in this first year and continuation of the activities celebrating his life's work, especially in the international young academic sector.

Kurz gemeldet: Leipzigs Oberbürgermeister Burghard Burkhard Jung und der Präsident der Handwerkskammer zu Leipzig Ralf Scheler auf Spritzfahrt. Beide testen mit Erfolg den kleinen Rover des Deutschen Highschool Teams (2014, Platz 6). Prädikat: Bestanden! Zur 1000 Jahrfeier der Stadt Leipzig dürfen sie dann das Weltmeisterfahrzeug aus der Ingenieursliga für große Jungs besteigen. Vielleicht findet in diesem Rahmen dann ja auch schon die erste NASA Roverchallenge der EU in der Messestadt statt?

Es ist unschwer zu sehen, dass diese technischen Zugpferde nicht nur die Jugend an Technik, Naturwissen-schaft und Handwerk binden.

Stand der Metallinnung, Augustusplatz, 20. September 2014, 13-18 Uhr

Man sieht sie nur selten, denn in ganz Europa fahren zur Zeit nur 3 Stück und das vorwiegend wenn es schon dunkel wird - die NASA Rover. Das sind hochgradig geländegängige Liegeräder mit vier Ballonreifen, zwei Fahrern und allerhand Hightech. Alles ist selbst gebaut, Kosten: 15.000 Euro und aufwärts. Die Konstrukteure sind Schüler im Alter von 8-18 Jahren. Die US-Raumfahrtagentur NASA ruft jährlich zum Konstruktions-Wettbewerb auf und der Leipziger Rennstall ist führend unter allen internationalen Teams. Ein 4. Leipziger Fahrzeug wird zur Zeit in Washington DC ausgestellt und ist Teil des Weltraumabenteuer-Films "Space Warriors".

Nichts geht da ohne Handwerk! Zwar zielt die "NASA Roverchallenge" auf die Wissenschaftler von morgen und setzt allerhand Herausforderungen, aber nichts geht da ohne den Fleiß eigener Hände, geführt von einem klugen Kopf. Die meisten der über zweitausend für einen NASA Rover benötigten Teile sind im Handel nicht erhältlich und müssen selbst entworfen und gefertigt werden. Hinzu kommen hohe Ansprüche an Belastbarkeit, Antrieb und Stabilität bei möglichst geringem Gewicht. Das ganze Fahrzeug muss zusammenklappbar sein und im Flugzeug transportierbar. Die Räder müssen ohne Luftdruck fahren. Sensoren erfassen zahlreiche Zustandsdaten und melden diese via Funk an die Rennleitung. Alles ist wie bei der Formel 1. Nur der Rennkurs ist anders, der besteht aus einer nachgestellten Marsoberfläche. Es gibt keinen geraden Asphalt - nur Krater, Steine, Staub und Lavarillen. Alles muss mit der geringsten Energie bewältigt werden. Es erfordert Können, Kondition und Wissen - die richtige Mischung für Fahrzeugbauer, Handwerksmeister und Wissenschaftler von Morgen.

Tobias Meier ist heute 18 Jahre und lernt Kfz-Mechaniker. Mit 13 lernte er auf dem "Tag des Handwerks 2010" im BTZ-Borsdorf einen NASA Rover kennen. Heute leitet er sein eigenes teils internationales Team mit eigenem Fahrzeug und eigenen Sponsoren. 3 Mal war er bereits in den USA und pirschte sich auf den 6. Platz unter 88 Teams vor. Sein Chef und seine Leipziger Sponsoren von der Metallinnung Leipzig sind stolz auf ihn.

Katja (Catherine Trusheva) ist gerade 14 geworden. Sie kommt aus Moskau. Mit 11 entwarf sie ein interstellares Raumschiff. Raumfahrt, Technik, Robotik und Naturwissenschaft ist alles für die zierliche Blonde. Dann wurde sie nach Leipzig eingeladen. Ganze 60 Tage ihrer Sommerferien opferte sie in der Messestadt und bekam dafür 3 Wochen NASA. Sie landete auf Anhieb auf dem 3. Platz und wurde in Washington ausgezeichnet. Seitdem wieder Schule ist, ist sie eine begehrte Jugendreferentin für Moskauer Schulen, Universitäten, Firmen und im TV.

Cosma Heckel (7) geht in die 2. Klasse. In den Ferien ist sie gern unterwegs und war bereits 4 Mal mit bei der NASA-Roverchallenge in den USA. Sie ist die jüngste Pilotin und bereitet sich für 2015 auf ihren ersten Wettkampf vor. In Leipzig stach sie als Radfahrerin beim Kindernachtrennen in den letzten 4 Jahren hervor und belegte alle drei ersten Plätze. Seit diesem Sommer wird sie auf einem NASA Rover gefördert und fuhr bereits 15 Kilometer am Stück, teilweise auch Nachts. In ihrer Grundschule besucht Cosma die Roboter AG.

Nadin Rößler (20) ist die Naturwissenschaftlerin in der Crew und studiert zurzeit am Lehramt als künftige Physiklehrerin. Mit 16 trat sie dem Leipziger NASA-Rennstall bei und fuhr seitdem 2 Rennen in den USA. Dabei kam sie mit ihrem Team 2013 auf den 2. Platz. Ihr Abitur schloß Nadin mit einer Besonderen Lernleistung ab, indem sie einen Exoplaneten (Planet in einem anderen Sonnensystem) nachwies. Sie bereitet sich derzeit wieder auf ein Rennen im Team Germany College vor und ist zugleich Ausbilderin für die jüngeren Teams.

Evgeniy Zakutin (25) ist Moskauer und absolvierte seinen ersten Leipziger Workshop im Winter 2010. Inzwischen absolvierte er als Raumfahrtingenieur das Moskauer Luft- und Raumfahrtzentrum mit Auszeichnung und schreibt unter der Förderung des International Space Education Institutes seine Doktorarbeit für ein ESA-Projekt in Leipzig. Evgeniy nahm bereits 3 Mal auf einer NASA Roverchallenge teil, ist zum Chefingenieur avanciert und bringt den jüngeren das Arbeiten an CAD-Programmen bei.

Der Leipziger Rennstall umfasst derzeit bereits 4 Teams und ist der einzige aus Europa, der die harten Aufnahmekriterien erfüllt. Zu ihm gehören nach 8 Jahren inzwischen die besten Schüler aus 3 Nationen, über 100 Firmen und zahlreiche prominente Wissenschaftler. Erste Alumnis unter den ehemaligen Schülern schreiben bereits an ihrer Doktorarbeit. Natürlich für die ESA.

Für Quereinsteiger bietet die NASA Rover AG die richtige Plattform in der Schule und außerschulisch. Es ist der richtige Einstieg in das künftige Handwerk, Ingenieurwesen und Wissenschaft. Vor allem aber beschleunigt eine hingabungsvolle und erfolgreiche Mitgliedschaft in den Projekten des International Space Education Institutes die schulischen Leistungen in jeglicher Hinsicht. Alle 3 Fahrzeuge werden am 20. September auf dem Augustusplatz zu sehen sein. Mutige dürfen sich auch einmal auf dem Copilotensitz probieren. Ein NASA-Outreach-Partner und beteiligte Handwerksunternehmen erklären vor Ort wie man mit einsteigen kann.

New for young scientists: Out-of-school workshop for the facilitation of talent in boys and girls aged 8-18.

After 10-years of international reciprocation between the Space Institute in Leipzig, the NASA and the Russian Aviation Institute, the "NASA Rover AG" in Leipzig offers a great stepping stone between the nations for young scientists.

The Leipzig association undertakes more than 250 events per year and has placed the best pupils and students into international competitions. In the past, almost every participant has acquired an academic career in either education or the sciences. Some discover career opportunities in foreign countries. The best so far have landed jobs in Formula 1, NASA or ESA, or have gone on to do a doctorate degree.

This group can be joined at the age of 8-years and requires an interest in discovery. You learn how to work a 3D-printer, to program robots and to discover the sciences for yourselves. From 12-13 years you will also be tackling the challenges of being part of an international team with several languages being spoken between your team members. From 16-17 you will realize that the world is a big place and that a lot of opportunities lie before you. Starting in Leipzig’s local businesses, you then conquer industrial companies around the world with your ideas, building prototypes and by introducing them to the professional world.

The many acknowledgements and contacts with well reputed academics and institutes will help you in choosing a job or course of study. We will support you worldwide up to the end of your undergraduate study or even further until the achievement of a doctorate. School pupils, student exchange and international exchange years are also possible.

At the core of the AG in Leipzig stands the construction of a NASA Rover (a sort of moonbuggy for your age group) with alternative functions and robotic controls. We follow the natural sciences and you can let off steam imaginatively. We start with 3D-printing and end with the CNC-milling machines. Modern social networking, public relations, and linguistic work, as well as the many trips are features that are particularly interesting for girls. It is not uncommon for the media all over the world to be looking over your shoulder. Problem fields like mathematics, physics, English or ethics become child's play when you take this AG with enthusiasm.
